Oregano cultivation

Working with the cultivation of oregano (Origanum vulgare) presents various challenges, as this valuable culinary and medicinal herb plays an important role not only in gastronomy but also in human and animal health.

In my experience, one of the greatest difficulties is weed control.Oregano is sensitive to several widely used post-emergence and pre-emergence herbicides, and the market primarily demands organically produced material. Choosing the right soil and ensuring regular but not excessive irrigation are essential, as the plant has a deep root system and requires good drainage. Although oregano is generally drought-tolerant, overwatering and waterlogging can negatively affect its development.

The cultivation of oregano is particularly exciting to me because of its essential oils, which are important for the food and pharmaceutical industries. These oils possess strong antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and are also used in animal health. In livestock production, for example, they help improve meat shelf-life, as their antibacterial components inhibit microbial growth and extend storage time. Oregano essential oils are also sometimes used as natural alternatives to antibiotics, supporting animal health in a more sustainable way, especially in poultry farming.

Overall, oregano cultivation requires careful management of environmental conditions and appropriate growing practices. The extraction of its essential oil and its broad range of applications represent the greatest value, contributing to natural and sustainable solutions in agriculture and animal health.
