Rosehip cultivation
Rosehip cultivation is an exciting field from many perspectives. The dog rose (Rosa canina) is one of Hungary’s best-known wild fruits and has been collected and processed for centuries. Its cultivation became significant in the mid-20th century, when its economic value was recognised due to its high vitamin C content and various health benefits. Rosehip is highly valued in medicine, the food industry and cosmetics, and its wide range of uses has led to steadily increasing interest.
The plant is most commonly propagated generatively, meaning from seed, but demand for vegetative propagation is also growing, as it allows the establishment of genetically uniform plantations. The dog rose has specific requirements for cultivation: although it is drought-tolerant, it prefers calcareous soils with good water management. Due to its wide ecological tolerance, it can thrive in various soil types; however, plant protection becomes especially important in cultivated stands, where pest and disease pressure is significantly higher.
One of the most important pests is the rose fruit fly, which reduces fruit quality. Field voles and several fungal diseases – such as rose rust – can also pose major problems. Therefore, developing an appropriate spray program, including both preventive and curative treatments, is essential for improving rosehip cultivation technology.
Harvest timing is critical: the optimal point is determined by fruit firmness, bright red colour and high vitamin C content. Harvesting at the right time is crucial for further processing, especially when producing jam, syrup or other food products.
Overall, rosehip cultivation offers excellent market opportunities thanks to its high nutritional value, versatile applications and health-promoting properties.
The Leányvár plantation – what we actually do
I have been working on the Leányvár plantation of Herbafarm Kft. since 2016: from the planning stage through the first fifty hectares in 2017 to today, with 180 hectares planted and 150 hectares in production. The stand is not made up of classic varieties but of a seed-propagated, genetically diverse population, because vegetative propagation is not solved at operational scale. In organic growing this is rather an advantage: agrobiodiversity brings adaptability. It is a disadvantage where the user expects stable active-substance content.
The main pests we deal with year after year: rose rust, voles, the rosehip fruit fly and late frosts, alongside leaf-eating caterpillars, the rose plume moth (Cnaemidophorus rhododactylus) and Lampronia morosa. For species-level identification we set up our own laboratory – without it, in an organic operation, you cannot time your interventions, and timing is one of the most important tools there is.
Harvesting is done with a converted grape harvester, followed by low-temperature drying, cleaning, breaking, de-seeding and de-hairing: the flesh becomes tea raw material and the seed becomes rosehip seed oil. The price of a lot is determined by its active-substance content (vitamin C, organic acids) and its classification (organic, machine-harvested, cleaned); the buyers are typically German, Austrian, Swiss and Czech herbal-tea, food and cosmetics companies.
Two topics take up most of the daily work: the practice of water retention without irrigation and bird-friendly plant protection. Both start from the same decision: what we do with the interrow.
My conviction is that raw-material production cannot be the end goal. The era of yield records is over: without processing capacity, added value and market building, even the best block stays exposed.
